Joshua appears in the 1860 Census at age 12 living with his parents. He is also living at home at age 22 in 1870. The 1870 Census notes that he could not write (but could read?).

In 1880 he may be listed as J. G. Maberry, age 31, living nearby on a farm with wife S.A. (29) and a daughter M. L. (2).
